Product Description

(Mature Size: 30-48"T x 36-48"W)

The Mexican Male Fern (Dryopteris pseudofilix-mas) was introduced to cultivation in the USA by Dr. John Mickel at the New York Botanic Garden.

This is a lush, tall 30″ to 4 foot bold evergreen that is surprisingly cold-tolerant for those of us north of the border.

With its bushy, dense habit it is not only a reliable shade garden component but can provide a low screen to define various areas in the landscape (or hide those that are better off hidden).

Unlike most other Dryopteris, this species continues to produce new fronds throughout the growing season.

A denizen of high elevation and moist areas in its native Mexico, it reaches its greatest potential in humus-y soils with shade. This fern is refreshingly drought-tolerant once established.

Hardy to zones 5-8. What's My Zone?
